Safety
In the Balinese language there is no equivalent word for tourist. The word used is "guest". 80% of Bali's economy is based on tourism as it remains the place in the world where locals freely mix with foreign visitors.
Perhaps for this reason Bali has become the target of terrorist attacks in recent years. These acts are those of a minority fringe within Indonesia. It's important to understand that the dominant direction of the country is one of democratic reforms and "gotong royong"— working together. The impact of these actions is devastating to tourism and the economy on Bali.
There are ways to visit Bali and be safe. The terrorist attacks have been limited to a narrow area known for its high density of tourists. What remains is over 99% of the island— the most exotic and beautiful of all. The best suggestion for visitors is to avoid places where large numbers of Westerners gather. You can count on me to show you the Bali less known while always keeping an eye towards your safety and well being.
Despite these threats to the island's economic survival there are many people who feel a strong kindred spirit with Bali, and will not abandon the Balinese during this challenging time. Once you visit Bali I know that you will feel the same way.
